Institutional Effectiveness

The Office of Institutional Research, Planning, and Effectiveness collects and analyzes data and disseminates information to support institutional decision making and planning. The office has responsibilities in the areas of institutional research, assessment, and planning. The staff collects and analyzes data regarding students, faculty, staff, facilities, and institutional programs, services, and operations. Reports generated from this data are used internally and are also transmitted to the North Carolina Community College System and to other external agencies. The office works with academic departments and support units to help them formulate planning goals and objectives and to assess their effectiveness in achieving their goals and objectives. The office works to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). In addition, the office is a resource for survey and questionnaire research about the college’s students, faculty, staff, programs, services, and operations.

WCC Economic Impact Study

Wilkes Community College (WCC) creates a significant positive impact on the business community and generates a return on investment to its major stakeholder groups—students, taxpayers, and society. Using a two-pronged approach that involves an economic impact analysis and an investment analysis, this study calculates the benefits received by each of these groups. Results of the analysis reflect fiscal year (FY) 2019-20. For the purposes of this analysis, the WCC Service Region is comprised of Wilkes, Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, and Surry Counties.

Performance Measures / Critical Success Factors

The North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) has established benchmarks for community colleges to measure the performance of critical success factors for community colleges within the state. Wilkes Community College monitors student performance to each measure: basic skills, College-level English success rates, College-level Math success rates, student progression in the first year, student completion, licensure pass rate index, and college transfer success rates. For each of the seven measures, WCC’s objective is to earn the “Excellence Level” rating for all seven performance measures annually. Note: Beginning with the 2022 Performance Measure Report, each measure received an index rate instead of a percentage rate.

Performance Measures / Critical Success Factors Definitions

  • Basic Skills Student Progress: Percentage of Basic Skills students who achieve an Educational Functioning Level gain during the program year (July 1 – June 30).
  • College-Level English Courses (Student Success Rates): Percentage of first-time Associate Degree seeking and transfer pathway students passing a credit-bearing English course with a “C” or better within two years of their first term of enrollment.
  • College-Level Math Courses (Student Success Rates): Percentage of first-time Associate Degree seeking and transfer pathway students passing a credit-bearing Math course with a “C” or better within two years of their first term of enrollment.
  • First Year Progression: Percentage of first-time fall curriculum students attempting at least 12 credit hours who successfully complete at least 12 hours within their first academic year (fall, spring, summer).
  • Curriculum Completion: Percentage of first-time fall curriculum students who, within six years of first term of enrollment, have either graduated, transferred, or are still enrolled with at least 36 non-developmental credit hours.
  • Licensure and Certification Passing Rate: Aggregate institutional passing rate of first-time test-takers on licensure and certification exams. Exams included in this measure are state mandated exams which candidates must pass before becoming active practitioners.
  • College Transfer Performance: The percentage of students who exited NCCCS after having completed an Associate Degree and/or least 30 cumulative hours of articulated transfer credits and subsequently transferred to a four-year college or university and earned a GPA of 2.25 or better after two consecutive semesters within the academic year at the institution.
